The International Toy Museum (ITM) is preparing to open to the public in mid October 2014. We will start with a pop-up Museum, possibly in Jack London Square in Oakland, California.
Opening in time for the Fall Holidays, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Kwanzaa, Chanukah, and Christmas, the Popp-up Museum will provide a small taste of the ITM’s grand plan. The International Toy Museum is starting small, but intends to become a world-class institution, providing for the study, preservation and display of toys while also providing a great research facility for the study of the impact of toys.
The ITM will provide multiple dimensions of toys – toys through history, toys of many cultures and lands, to for boys and toy for girls, toy for babies and toys for sophisticated older kids. ITM will enable students of toys to study large horizontal and vertical collections. Online research will be enabled by the ITM’s Virtual Museum, providing 3D interaction with the collection.
The Pop-up ITM will be about 1,000 square feet of space, filled with a miniature version of what we hope the ITM will become. Complementing several displays, including a complete set of Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head from the 1950's to present day. Other expected displays will include the Recyclosaurus -- a 6-foot tall cardboard Tyrannosaurus Rex, some old toys from the first settlements in California, and some surprise exhibits and interactive activities. There will also be a gift shop and a chance to meet other toy aficionados.
